Learning and Teaching

At Western Heights College our goal is to provide and sustain an inclusive, stimulating and supportive community of skilled and creative learners which enhances the opportunities, pathways, personal growth and well-being of all members. The structure of our learning community and the spaces which are purpose-built, state-of-the-art and flexible, provide optimum conditions for learning.

Relationship schooling

The safe and supportive learning community structure fosters positive and productive relationships for our learners.  All students have their own learning mentor and dynamic personal learning plans (PLP) that transfer into their pathways plans (MIPs).

Authentic Curriculum

Students engage in intellectually demanding tasks, taking opportunities to work alone and with others.  They develop understanding, practice skills, create new knowledge and reflect deeply on their learning.  Our curriculum is supported by technology, accessing 24/7 learning.  Students contribute to podcasts to videos, use OneNote, Edmodo and a range of apps to record their thinking and reflections.

Learning and Teaching Practices

Schooling has changed.  Learners now are much more than receivers of content.  They demand instructional practices that support them to lead their own learning.  In our flexible learning spaces our focus is on each learner; using purposeful, contemporary, learning practices.  Teacher teams develop strong, sequential units, supported through the coaching philosophy within the college.

Personalised Approach

Our students know their strengths and set personal learning goals for future improvements; monitoring progress, always striving for success. The curriculum within our College includes personal learning units at Years 7 & 8, advisory sessions at Years 9, 10 & 11 and specialised tutorial sessions at Years 11 & 12.  Personalised assessment and reporting practices are established with Year 7 – 10 students leading their own conference and VCE/VCAL students leading Parent Teacher Student conversations, each as active, contributing participants.

Celebrating Success

We take every opportunity to celebrate success, knowing that everyone needs to feel acknowledged and valued.  Our students develop in confidence through the celebrations of their learning, demonstrating commitment within our college to lifelong learning.
